SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
A Black History Month walking tour shines a spotlight on Sacramento’s vibrant Oak Park neighborhood.
The tour takes participants on a stroll around the historic buildings in Oak Park’s 40 acres and details the community’s rich past and present.
Key stops on the tour include Underground Books, Fixins Soul Kitchen and the Historic Guild Theater.
The tour is led by Dru Burks, the director of St. HOPE Academy. Burks said the tour introduces the participants to businesses they may not have heard of, while giving an insight into Sacramento’s history.
The Guild Theater, located at 2828 35th Street in Sacramento’s historic Oak Park neighborhood, has been a cultural landmark since its original opening in 1915. Designed and financed by Joseph Lewis, it was the largest of three theaters on 35th Street at the time.
Over the years, the theater has undergone several transformations, including periods as the Oak Park Theater, Victor Theater, and New Oak Park Theater. In 1952, it reopened as the Guild Theater, featuring a modern marquee and seating for 467 patrons. After a phase of decline and vacancy, the theater was revitalized and is now managed by St. HOPE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to community development through public education, civic leadership, economic growth, and the arts.
Founded in 1989 by former Mayor, NBA star and Oak Park resident Kevin Johnson, the St. HOPE organization accepted the challenge of restoring the Guild Theater after it had been vacant for many years, finishing the full restoration in 2003.
