Lunch at the Library is part of the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program, administered in California by the CA Department of Education. It’s a partnership between the California State Library, the California Library Association, and local libraries—made possible by funding from the State of California.
This institution is an equal opportunity provider.

🕑 Time: 14:00 – 15:00 BST / 6:00 AM – 7:00 AM PDT
🧭 Location: Online | Hosted by The National Archives
Discover the fascinating evolution of British policing in this compelling online talk. Paul Carter, collections specialist at The National Archives, explores the dramatic rise of law enforcement from the late 1700s to early 1800s—a time of social unrest, urban growth, and public demand for order.
Uncover how private thief-takers, paid watchmen, and citizen-run prosecution societies gave way to a centralized and professional police force—including the formation of the iconic Metropolitan Police in 1829. This transition reshaped not only law enforcement but the very fabric of modern justice.
Following the talk, Paul will be joined by Clare Smith, Curator of the Metropolitan Police Museum in Sidcup, for a live Q&A session where they’ll dive deeper into policing archives and answer your questions.
