Central Library (Sacramento)
Located in the heart of downtown, Sacramento’s Central Library is the system’s flagship destination for research, technology, events, and community learning—plus standout spaces like the Sacramento Room (local history) and the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria event venue.
A Quick Bit of History
The library traces its roots back to Sacramento’s early private collections in the 1850s, became a free public library in 1879, and opened a landmark Central building in 1918 with the help of a Carnegie grant. The current modern Central Library facility celebrated its grand opening in 1992.
